The Altagracia province located on the south east side of the Dominican Republic is home to stunning resorts communities such as Bavaro, La Romana and Punta Cana. With stunning unspoiled white-sandy beaches, vibrant coral reefs, internationally recognized 'signature' golf course, this area is fast becoming the playground of the Caribbean.

The area is served by Punta Cana international airport, a tranquil 'thatched' building that truly reminds you of arriving on a island paradise. This airport is one of the busiest and best connected airports in the Caribbean. In 2008, Punta Cana received 3,758,109 passengers, making it the busiest airport in the Dominican Republic. It was also the world's first privately owned international airport. In late 2009, the airport opened a US Customs preclearance station, which allows passengers to clear customs and immigration before boarding a direct flight to the USA. Precleared flights can land at domestic terminals in the US.

Punta Cana is listed 79 in the top 100 places to visit before you die. (conducted by U.C.L.A)

Celebrities are fast flocking to the area such as Oscar de la Renta, Bill Clinton and of course Julio Inglsias. The arrival of Punta Cana resorts and Cap Cana has firmly placed this area on the map.

Punta Cana-Bavaro's resorts show an eclectic variety of architecture and interior design inspired by Spanish and native Dominican cultures. Areas bordering Punta Cana include Cap Cana to the south and the original tiny fishing-village of Cabo San Rafael. A 100 metres (330 ft) high cliff is located more to the south, near of Boca de Yuma town, a fishing village dated from the 16th century. Nearby, you can find the Ponce de Leon's Fortress, in San Rafael del Yuma town. This is one of the most isolated area within the La Altagracia Province though.

Located on the south eastern tip of the country, Punta Cana is best known for its amazing white sandy beaches and is a great place to relax and get a great tan.  But, if you are the more adventurous type, there is still plenty to keep you happy!

Here are some of the activities available in Punta Cana:

Beach Buggies - You can enjoy an excursion that will take you through the coastline and more. At the same time you drive the buggy you will see how the people live in the nearby villages. You will also be able to explore caves, take the buggy to different ranches, go horseback riding and more.

Manati Park – This nature park is located just outside Punta Cana and there you will find iguanas, alligators, monkeys, turtles, dolphins, sea lions, flamingos, toucans and parrots. There is an aviary where you can actually enter and enjoy the view of several beautiful birds. There are several shows on offer including a daily aquatic show and a taino show, where some local Dominicans recreate an ancient tribal dance.

SCUBA diving and snorkeling – The beautiful clear, turquoise waters are perfect for both SCUBA divers and snorkellers.  Most of the resorts offer both courses and guided tours and the islands of Saona and Catalina provide some excellent dive sites.

Marinarium – Visit one of the few large marine reserves in the Caribbean, where experienced instructors will guide you on a snorkel tour over the reefs.  You can also take a night time excursion where the entire area is lit up as you swim.

Jeep Safari – Take a tour to experience the rural side on the country.  A guide will take you to visit a sugar cane plantation, a local school and a Dominican home, where you you enjoy fresh fruit, coffee and learn about the local culture.

Golf – The golf courses here are recognized to be amongst the best in the world, with many designed by golf legends.  The courses are huge and feature lagoons, lakes and spectacular surroundings.

Isla Saona – Take a Catamaran out to the island where you can enjoy snorkeling, sunbathing and a little shopping.  An exhilarating speedboat ride will take you back to the mainland, stopping at a small sandbank on the way.
