It is located at the eastern end of the county's north coast, at the western extreme of the Bahía Escocesa, 130 kilometers north of Santo Domingo. Cabrera is quite a small town with little tourism infrastructure. Close by to the towns of Cabrera are the towns of Rio San Juan and Nagua.

Cabrera is considered one of the most beautiful places in the Dominican Republic. Located facing the Atlantic, Cabrera has one of the most beautiful beaches, rivers, exotic vegetation and many natural attractions. A National Park reserve is located in El Breton, a small section of Cabrera called Cabo Frances Viejo.

Cabrera, Rio San Juan and the Playa Grade area offer the more discerning buyer the perfect choice for high end holiday homes or a permanent option away from the Sosua / Cabarete area.

The area specialises in some of the finest real estate in the country and is home to Orchid Bay and Sea Tree, two of the most exclusive gated communities in the Dominican Republic. Some may find year round living limited in the area, as the choice for schools for families, supermarkets etc. are not as available as Sosua. However it does offer a far more relaxed lifestyle.

The area is noted for it's fine beaches such as Playa Grande and Playa Calatone. There is great diving in the area around Rio San Juan as well and with the famous Robert Trent Jones Playa Grande close by, it is no wonder this is fast becoming the holiday spot of the Dominican Republic for the wealthy.

Located to the east of Puerto Plata, Cabrera is considered one of the most beautiful places in the Dominican Republic. Located facing the Atlantic, Cabrera has some of the most beautiful beaches, rivers, exotic vegetation and many natural attractions.

Here are some of the places you can visit:

Dudu Lagoon and Blue Lagoon - Not far east of Cabrera you will find these freshwater lagoon phenomenons, offering the visitor a unique experience.  The Blue Lagoon appears so clean that is shimmers a shade of blue. You can jump into either one of them for a refreshing swim. The surroundings are truly beautiful. Some dive operation use the Dudu Lagoon for first classic cave scuba-diving.

Playa Grande - This long stretch of white sand and clear turquoise waters is edged on each side by spectacular cliffs and has been voted as one of the 10 best beaches in the world by Condé Nast travel magazine. The beach is popular for both relaxing and, on days when the surf is up, catching a wave or two body surfing or body boarding. You can eat your meal right on the beach, served to you from one of the small Dominican restaurants.

Gri Gri Lagoon – Located in Rio San Juan, the Gri Gri Lagoon area offers boat trips through it's winding waters where mangrove forests make a canopy over most of your journey. During this trip you'll see caves that are unique to this area of the country, life the 'cave of the swallows', and can take advantage of swimming in 'La Piscina', a crystal clear ocean cove where the lagoon ends.

Playa Caleton – This beautiful beach has virtually no waves and is superb for snorkeling with caves nearby. It's a favorite for just playing around in the water. There are local food stands and souvenir shops on the beach as well.

Playa Diamonte - A very pretty beach that was formed from an estuary where an underground river sends fresh water into the ocean. The result is a broad beach that is very shallow for up to 200 feet into the ocean. This is an excellent beach if you have small children, and it has easy drive-up access.

Golf – Located between Rio San Juan and Cabrera, the Playa Grande Golf Course is one of the most stunning courses in the Caribbean.  Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr, this challenging course is known as the ‘Pebble Beach of the Caribbean’ due to it’s inspired use of the sea cliffs along the coastline.  Avid golfers should not miss the opportunity to play on this course!
