The Samana penensula on the north east side of the Dominican Republic is home to beutiful towns such as Las Galeras and Las Terrenas. With stunning unspoiled white-sandy beaches, coconut-covered mountains, clear mountain streams winding through lush, tropical rain forests, vibrant coral reefs, internationally known whale-watching, Samana offers an alternative more tranquil destination.

Samaná is considered one of the most beautiful areas of the Dominican Republic, yet remains one of the least known by Dominican natives in general and foreign visitors in particular. Its tourist industry has not yet exploited the full potential of its location: the tropical forests, coconut groves, hundreds of cozy alcove beaches with turquoise crystal clear waters, waterfalls, protected national parks, a protected bay, a peninsula

With it's laid back atmosphere and miles of sandy white beaches, Las Terrenas offers an alternative location to those looking for their dream retirement home and with the opening of the new airport at El Catey close by, this is sure to become a very popular area.

Other attractions in the Samana, Las Galeras and Las Terrenas area, includes the fabulous beach at Playa Rincon, El Limon waterfalls, Caya Levantado (where the famous Bounty chocolate commercial was shot) and of course the annual whale watching season which runs normally starts around December 15th through to March 15th.

Las Terrenas and Samana are destinations for nature lovers and adventurers. Green, green mountains, long beaches, solitude, lively little towns in between, turquoise waters.  The newly built international airport has made both of these towns much more accessible.

Local activities include:

Whale watching - The best period to observe them is between January and March. It is breathtaking sight. These mammals that reach 15 meter and can weigh 40 ton, have chosen the bay of Samaná to mate and to give birth. Because they come in such quantities to this protected area and so close to the coast, they offer watchers an exceptional opportunity.

National Park Los Haitises - Los Haitises is a large zone of rocky hills, mangroves, rivers and small islands, with more than 100 different species of birds (of the 270 in the country), several manatees (sea cows), sea turtles, bats and reptiles. You will also see the many caves (with stalagmites and stalactites) with walls covered with inscriptions, witnesses of the time the Tainos lived here.

El Limon Eco-Tourism - Among the peninsula’s several ecological groups, an important one is the Ecotourism association of El Limón, which consists of various ranches that organize excursions on horseback to the falls. Another interesting initiative is the organization the women of El Limón, who make and sell handicraft products, to make a living in their village.

Adventure & Eco Tours - Take a tour through the wild and beautiful surroundings. You can make tours by car, jeep, quad or bike. Whatever you prefer. The local tour-operators can give you good advice. Samana is especially a very good spot for eco-tours.

Windsurfing & Kiting - Las Terrenas and its surrounding beaches are very good spots for windsurfing and the very popular kiting.

SCUBA diving & snorkeling - At almost every beach at Las Terrenas you'll find a dive shop. There are several stations where you can go on diving tours. It has outstanding opportunities all year long.

Golf - At this moment there is a small 9-hole golf located at Samana and a brand new 18 hole course is being built in Las Terrenas.

Cayo Levantado – This is the tropical island in the Samana Bay, where the “Bounty” commercial was taken. A small paradise in a paradise! Take a boat tour to this island, go snorkeling, banana-riding, have a very good local meal and enjoy life...
